Last Class This School Year 6-11-12

The student artists put forth some good effort to finish-up projects. The primary focus was to complete the monochromatic painting started last week. Today, students worked on their foreground by adding black to shade the purple base color. Most students finished. Other students finished their non-objective watercolors. Anything that was left behind can be procured in the Art Room (attached with magnets to the white board).

It's been a pleasure presenting art experiences to the children! Look for new and different experiences being offered next year. 'Smart with Art' provides enriching experiences that connect history, cultures, artists, techniques, and materials. Art is a journey, not a destination.

Monochromatic Landscapes / Smart With Art 6-4-12

Today, students were introduced to monochromatic colors and started a landscape painting with acrylics using tints of purple. After an introduction of atmospheric perspective with examples, students learned that tints of colors are created by adding white and shades created by adding black. Students started painting on their canvas boards with light background colors for the sky, mountains, and hills and next week will add black to the base purple color for foreground details. Next week is the last session before school is out for the summer. Students can take their work home if they haven't done so already. Any work left behind will be delivered to their regular classroom teacher. Art connects.

Medina Smart With Art 5-21-12

Today, students reviewed the latest project, a symmetrical non-objective piece using watercolor pencils.

Students viewed their previous project, chalk pastel landscapes (as seen in last post), discussed improvements and resumed working on them. Most students are finished and these were taken home. They've been sprayed with a fixative but chalk can still rub off, so be aware of this when handling he artwork. Several students were able to start the non-objective project and will continue during the next session.

REMINDER: Memorial Day Holiday is next Monday and there is no school/no art class. We're back together on Monday, June 4th. The Bellevue School District High School Art Show can currently be viewed at Crossroads Mall through Saturday, May 26th.

For information on First Fridays at the Bellevue Arts Museum, Summer Adventure Camps, birthday parties, etc., check out www.smartwithart.net. Art aprons and portfolios can be ordered from the website and brought to you child's next Smart With Art session.  Have a safe holiday weekend!

Medina Art Enrichment Monday 5-14-12

Images saved right-side up but program didn't upload them as such.
It was good to have everyone back for art … on a nice, sunny day!  Today students continued working on their cityscapes after a brief review including the use of shapes, repetition, and overlapping . Most had finished drawing their designs and applied white tempera. Today, colored chalk pastel was added. Miss Jenny was our guest teacher for Mrs. Person.
Next week, a non-objective project will be introduced and students will execute them in watercolor pencil. Students will have the opportunity to complete their charcoal still life drawing as well as the cityscapes.
Again, many thanks for remembering to send your child with an afternoon snack and coming to the art room to sign-out your child.  –Carl Clausen , Art Teacher

ATTENTION! Next week, May 7th, the regular session of Smart With Art at Medina will be replaced with a special Mother's Day - Father's Day 'TOP SECRET' session where students will make two gifts that will be gift packaged.

Today's session started with a review and short critique of their previous charcoal project. The new project of a chalk pastel cityscape project was introduced. We discussed repetition, pattern and overlapping. The older students were encouraged to add overlapping and perspective to their art. After drawing, students painted outlines with white tempera on black paper using a Q-tip. Color (chalk pastel) will be added at the next session on May 14th.

MONDAY, APRIL 24th

Discovering Charcoal
After a discussion of a historical context of charcoal and its characteristics, students began a still life utilizing fruit. Students practiced making a variety of 2D fruit shapes and changed them to appear 3D by overlapping the shapes and shading them. In addtion to charcoal sticks, students used kneaded erasers, and blending stumps (tortillons) on paper. These will be continued to be developed as time allows, sprayed with a fixitive and mounted on black paper. They are still a work-in-progress.
